Dispatches from Austin: Trans-Pecos Festival of Music and Love

Contributor post by Tracy Castro of Fair Morning Blue

Howdy, Poppytalk friends! There is an amazing event going on in Marfa in a couple of weeks: The Trans-Pecos Festival of Music and Love.  Oh, how I wish I could go! But since I can't go this year, I thought I could at least tell y'all about it, and we can daydream together. Or - if you're lucky, perhaps you can make last minute arrangements? One of the coolest things about this year's festival is that Austin's own GirlsGuild is bringing local artists out to Marfa to teach workshops in leather

hand-tooling, fabric cyanatopes and cameraless animation. GirlsGuild is a commendable organization that connects girls with women artists and makers in apprenticeship to learn skills, find their voice, and build a collaborative community.

The Trans-Pecos gathering takes place at El Cosmico, a West Texas desert campsite (founded by hotelier Liz Lambert) that includes nightly rentals of trailers, teepees, and safari tents, as well as good, old-fashioned tent camping. The Trans-Pecos event includes four fun days of food, music and art-making, as well as three nights of camping under the great big starry sky. Doesn't that sound lovely?

Imagine waking up in this teepee, enjoying a fun day with friends, attending workshops, making art, eating yummy pancakes from Lou Lambert, and listening to really good Texas music (like Ben KwellerAmy Cook and my favorite hardcore latin funk band, Brownout.)

Or perhaps you'd prefer to spend your nights in the comfort of this trailer? Don't you just love the Aculpolco chair out front?  Sigh.
